Rapunzel comes to Northport, John Engeman Theatre

Rapunzel, a Tangled Tale  is now playing at the John W. Engeman Theatre in the quaint seaside town of Northport. I was excited to see this age-old fairy tale as I honestly couldn’t remember what it was about. I knew there was a fair-haired girl, locked up in a tower against her wishes and I knew she had really long hair. But when Big B (4) asked me what it was about, I really had to do my homework.

Turns out I was only missing a few details, and I enjoyed the way the actors spun the old Grimms Bros. Fairy tale to be both modern while keeping necessary classic elements.

The John W. Engeman theatre is the perfect size for a family friendly production. The theatre is neat and clean and free boosters are offered for those that need a better view.

The set was very simple and the cast consisted of 4 talented actors. (The cast played several roles each.) This musical version of Rapunzel was entertaining, sweet and appropriate for children of all ages.  I loved that the children weren’t overstimulated and they could really attend to the show. Rapunzel, a Tangled Tale was approximately 90 minutes long with a brief intermission. During the intermission light snacks and water  by ” a lady with a tray”.

I love the way the actors interacted with the audience, kept the language simple and playful and were very silly and funny. I enjoyed it as much as my two children.  I loved that the theatre welcomed small children although the show was entertaining for all ages. The kids got a big kick out of Rapunzel’s very long wig and couldn’t believe how the prince was able to climb up it.

The storyline was easy to follow and the children were engaged the whole time. They laughed, and were in awe when Prince Brian and Rapunzel journeyed through the “forest” right near their feet! I found Prince Brian and the squire to be quite funny and they really seemed to be having a great time. Rapunzel’s mother, the witch,  had quite a beautiful voice and was quite convincing when she needed to be.

All in all, we enjoyed the afternoon at the theatre and we recommend both the  John W. Engeman theatre as well as seeing Rapunzel, a Tangled Tale.
