Oh So Savvy Mom is giving away 5 Strider Balance Bikes and we’re getting in on the action! I had never heard of a balance bike before a neighbor’s child zoomed up to my front door riding one. I was intrigued… Was it a bike? or something better? I saw the familiar parts of a bike and wanted to know where the pedals were. She explained that a balance bike, well… helps to build…balance. It teaches children (recommended 1-5 yrs of age) to hold their own weight, center themselves and get a feel for riding. A bike with training wheels does not truly teach your child to ride a bike. I know this first hand, as on THAT Easter Sunday when my daddy took my training wheels off, I nearly ruined a neighbor’s new Mustang. ( I’m sure my daddy is cringing just being reminded of it) I spent the next several days, “learning” how to ride a bike. Sorry Dad!

The idea behind the balance bike is for the child to learn to safely balance on two wheels as opposed to starting them out on a tricycle or a bike with training wheels. Tricycles can easily tip over, scrape ankles and are difficult to pedal. Bikes with training wheels won’t teach your child handling skills.
